Teaching students the lessons I have prepared has proven to be quite enjoyable. I have found that the students really enjoy the lessons when they are planned well. One lesson I taught was about plants and their parts. I began by teaching the students the parts of a plant and the purpose of each part. Then they did a crafty activity that helped them remember what they had learned. One aspect of teaching that I need to work on is classroom management. As I teach and ask questions, I ask the students to raise their hands to answer. This way they are not yelling out their answers all at once and getting rather loud in the process. However, many students choose not to comply with this rule. I also need to get better at explaining and repeating directions for assignments. I have been working on improving myself in this area this semester; however, I still must make some adjustments. I need to remember that I am speaking to young children who need direction and not adults that generally only need one explanation to complete the projects that I assign.
One aspect of my lesson that went relatively well was my ability to activate the students’ schemas about plants. I began with what they knew about seeds and proceeded to discuss plants. I also think the activity was well planned. Besides the fact that I did not provide the best explanation in the beginning, the students were able to complete it and learn from it. Overall, I believe the lesson went well.
